Dmitry Fomin, Sergey Genkin, Ilia Itenberg. The rules below broadly follow those of a Mathematical Battle as given in Appendix A of Mathematical Circles (Russian Experience) by Fomin, Gengkin and Itenberg. Upon graduation, alumni were often co- opted into the mentoring ranks, and this practice of training its own instructors proved surprisingly resilient even in the face of mass exodus of Russian mathematicians in the late 80s and early 90s. The inspiration for running math auctions in my session came from an idea I first read about in the book Mathematical Circles (Russian Experience) by Dmitri Fomin, Se! To call attending these circles a rite of passage is an understatement—it has been defining experience for several generations of St. American Mathematical Society, 1996. Mathematical Circles: Russian Experience . Adaptation provided by Sam Vandervelde and Jon Ziegler. Both recent Fields medalist from St. Rgey Genkin, and Ilia Itenberg.
